[Expo MC Report] The Republic of Nauru – Discovering the Joy of Hosting through the Big Smiles of a Small Nation
On August 16, I had the honor of serving as the bilingual MC for the Republic of Nauru National Day event held at the Expo 2025 National Day Hall.
Nauru is a tiny island nation with a population of only about 10,000. It’s a matrilineal society where people inherit their mother’s clan. Traditionally, there were 12 clans, but now 10 remain. What really surprised me was learning that Nauru is said to be the birthplace of bungee jumping! I watched a video showing young men diving headfirst with vines tied around their ankles as a rite of passage — it was so intense that I could hardly keep my eyes open.
For this event, the Nauruan organizers requested a cheerful and friendly atmosphere. To reflect that, I wore an artificial flower in Nauru’s national colors on my ear. It was a small touch, but it instantly brightened the mood and added a sense of fun to the event.
During rehearsals, the performers were full of energy, but when the show began, I noticed a bit of nervousness — which somehow made their sincerity and modesty shine through even more. In the finale, the audience joined in the dance, and the entire hall became one big celebration. It beautifully embodied Nauru’s spirit of “enjoying together with everyone.”
Standing on stage at international events like this reminds me that an MC is not just a facilitator but also a key part of setting the tone and energy of the program. Even a small gesture or thoughtful touch can transform the entire atmosphere. This event was a wonderful reminder of the power of connection and presence.
